Stabilising Undamped Input-Filter of Boost Converters using MPC: Enabler of Compact and Lightweight Filters for AC/DC & DC/DC Systems
Undamped input filters in boost converters have the potential to introduce oscillations or instabilities. Current approaches to ensure stability predominantly rely on passive damping techniques, which increase system weight, volume, and component count without effectively contributing to harmonic attenuation. However, when model predictive control (MPC) with a long-prediction horizon is applied, efficient and robust active damping can be achieved, facilitating the design of compact and lightweight filters without additional physical damping circuits. Simulation results are presented to validate the control performance of MPC with undamped input-filters and demonstrate its resilience to time-varying external inductances.
