An Two-Stage Harmonic Optimization Method For Optimal Sitting and Sizing of APFs in Distribution Networks to Minimize THDs and Harmonic Losses

With the massive application of distributed generation and new flexible loads, the characteristics of nonlinear loads distributed access pose significant challenges to the traditional "point-to-point" harmonic mitigation approach in the distribution network. The technology of multi-machine coordinated harmonic mitigation of active power filters (APFs) at the network side of the distribution network has emerged. However, current coordinated control schemes of APFs mainly focus on harmonic distortion indices while neglecting the optimization of harmonic loss, which is also an important indicator affecting the safe and stable operation of the distribution network. Hence, this paper proposes a two-stage network-level harmonic suppression method for sitting and sizing a few APFs, aiming at both harmonic suppression and reduction of harmonic loss in the distribution networks. This method not only considers harmonic distortion and harmonic loss mitigation but also reduces control costs and improves the operational stability of distribution networks.
