Analysis of household entry and exit records appearing in the Gakchodongmyeon household register of 1870

The Joseon household register, a regional ledger encompassing all residents, was compiled every three years in a cycle known as “siknyeon,” providing a continuous record of regions and individual families over long periods. Research on the Joseon household register has been ongoing for a long time, and it has been revealed that households were registered according to the total population allocated to each region based on the government's population policy. This signifies that the registered households in the household register were “constructed and organized according to a certain intention.” This research focuses on the entry and exit of households, aiming to examine which households were removed and newly registered in successive “siknyeon” cycles. In this regard, a new record emerges in the Daegu-bu Gakchodongmyeon household register from 1870, which was not present in previous records. Located between households, this record indicates the removal of households from the register with notations like “移去” (migration) or “故” (death), providing a reason for their removal. This paper designates this record as “出戶竝記,” highlighting the need for examining “various records” that cannot be captured by the conventional standardized data in Joseon household register research.
