FREE1 condensates mediate energy-independent membrane remodeling via wetting
Membrane-bound and membrane-less organelles are vital for the structured organization and functional synchronization of cellular components. While much is known about their individual roles, the interactions between these two organelle types and their broader biological significance are not yet fully understood. In an exciting development, an important study recently published in Nature has shown that FREE1 condensates can influence membrane remodeling through both energy-driven and energy-independent processes. This occurs by either recruiting the ESCRT complex, which requires energy, or employing a wetting mechanism that does not. This research introduces a new concept in membrane scission, enhances our understanding of the interaction between membrane-bound and membrane-less organelles, and offers insights into the self-organizing properties of early life forms.
