Supercapacitor Based STATCOM for Enhancing Power Quality in Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems

This paper presents an analysis of a Supercapacitor-Based Feedforward Control Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) designed to enhance power quality in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. The study emphasizes on employing the Feedforward Management technique for STATCOM operation in order to reduce harmonics and regulate reactive power in electrical transmission systems. By using instantaneous system current values for feedback control the Feedforward Control methodology confirms a prompt and accurate reaction, in contrast to the more straightforward but less responsive indirect control approaches. The proposed STATCOM and its controller were simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The results confirm that the Feedforward Control technique is a useful technique for reducing total harmonic distortion (THD) and increasing power quality.
