Multiple Port EV Battery Charging Using Reconfigurable Input from Solar PV and Grid

In response to the growing need for sustainable energy solutions for EV battery charging, this paper integrates the solar-grid system, for multiple-port on-board charging of lithium-ion batteries. The system employs both solar photovoltaic (PV) and grid sources to charge the lithium-ion EV batteries and storage lead-acid battery bank to balance out the intermittency of the solar PV. The dual source charging optimizes energy utilization, enabling users to utilize solar energy efficiently during peak sunlight hours and seamlessly switch to grid power during periods of low solar generation. The system maximizes solar PV performance through perturb and observe methods, ensuring optimal power extraction, and implements power factor correction when utilizing grid power. The lithium-ion battery is charged using the constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) approach using phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) converter and high frequency transformer. The charging of EV battery utilizes multiple sources, i.e., solar, grid, and lead-acid battery. This combination maximizes utilization of solar PV power. The MATLAB simulation is employed to verify the performance of the proposed system under various availability combination of input source.
