Metabolism

Objective This study investigated the effects of different types of exercise before breakfast on lipid metabolism.Method The study participants were seven healthy females with no relevant limitations on exercise. In this study, 40 minutes of treadmill exercise equivalent to 30% (walking) and 70% maximal oxygen uptake (V O 2 max) during running was measured before breakfast (before breakfast condition) and after breakfast (after breakfast condition). Results and discussion No significant interaction was found between conditions (before and after breakfast) and time. However, lipid oxidation during walking and running was significantly higher before than after breakfast, which indicated that the promotion of lipid metabolism during running before breakfast, as reported in previous studies, showed a similar tendency during walking. Therefore, when performed before breakfast, even low-intensity walking can promote lipid metabolism as a compensatory response to a low glycogen state.Furthermore, a significant interaction was observed when comparing the changes in lipid oxidation during 40 minutes of walking and running before breakfast. That is, the findings revealed that lipid oxidation during exercise in a low glycogen state increased over time when running, where the sympathetic nervous response is higher than that when walking.
