Exercise training
Aims] Judo matches last for 4 minutes, and aerobic capacity may influence performance depending on the weight class. However, training methods specifically designed for judo athletes have not yet been established. This study aims to examine the effect of highintensity, short-duration, intermittent cross exercises (HIICE) using ropes and bodyweight on oxygen uptake (V O 2 ) in judo athletes during exercise.[Methods] The study involved 15 male university judo athletes (age: 201 years, body weight: 85.011.9kg).The oxygen uptake (V O 2 ) during HIICE, which alternates 20 seconds of rope exercise (RE) and burpee jumps (BJ) using body weight, with 10 seconds of rest between each exercise, was measured over a total of 8 repetitions (4 each).[Results] The maximum V O 2 during BJ in HIICE (29.85.9 ml/kg/min) was significantly higher than the maximum V O 2 during RE (27.63.2 ml/kg/min) (p<0.05).A negative correlation was observed between body weight and the maximum V O 2 during HIICE (r=-0.794,p<0.001).When the athletes were divided into two groups based on weight class (below 81 kg and above 90 kg), the maximum V O 2 of the below 81 kg group (n=9, 33.24.3ml/kg/min) was significantly higher than that of the above 90 kg group (n=6, 26.43.6 ml/kg/min) (p<0.01).[Discussion] During HIICE, BJ elicited higher V O 2 compared to RE, and this was particularly notable in lighter-weight judo athletes. These findings suggest that training methods tailored to weight classes are necessary.[Conclusion] The developed HIICE may contribute to improving aerobic capacity in judo athletes.
