PREVALENCE OF ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM AMONG PATIENTS WITH ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME

Background: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the Department of General Medicine,MIMS Mandya. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) among patients with acute coronary (ACS) admitted to intensive care unit in the department of General Medicine, MIMS Mandya. Methods: The study was conducted on 80 ACS patients admitted to our intensive cardiac care unit were prospectively screened for AAA from June 2023 to December 2023,.AAA was defined as an aneurysm with a transverse diameter of ≥30mm.Results: The patients were predominantly males (sex ratio 8:1),and the majority of ACS cases were STEMI (68%).AAA was diagnosed in 6.25% of patients (5 out of 80).All AAA patients were male, had a higher prevalence of smoking, and a lower incidence of diabetes mellitus. AAA prevalence showed a positive correlation with age, being 11.5% in patients older than 60 years and 20.7% in those over 65 years. Conclusion: The prevalence of AAA among ACS patients is significantly high, and it increases with age. This study highlights the importance of routine screening for AAA in ACS patients. As the prevalence is substantial, a comprehensive evaluation of these patients may help in timely diagnosis and management of AAA, thus potentially reducing morbidity and mortality
