Methodological Reflections on the Displacement Narratives from the Polish-Ukrainian Border

This article explores the methodological and ethical complexities encountered in researching the life trajectories of displaced Ukrainians at the Polish-Ukrainian border during the refugee crisis. Conducted from Summer 2022 to Autumn 2023, this study draws on over 100 semi-structured interviews with displaced Ukrainians, volunteers, and humanitarian workers. The article explores the difficulties of interviewing individuals in transit zones, where the experiences of displacement and trauma are still recent. Key issues include maintaining critical reflexivity as a researcher with a shared cultural background, balancing the dual roles of volunteer and data collector, and preventing retraumatization. The involvement of psychologists for participant screening, although unconventional, proved essential in safeguarding participants' well-being. This study highlights the potential for research in crisis settings to contribute to both data collection and emotional support for participants, offering insights into ethically conducting research with displaced individuals in sensitive environments.
