Greenway Planning for Cittaslow and Ecological Transportation Systems: The Case of Cittaslow Uzundere
The Cittaslow movement offers a model aimed at enhancing sustainable quality of life in settlements with populations under 50,000. This model not only focuses on preserving local cultural values but also embraces environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism principles. In this context, greenways stand out as a sustainable land-use model that integrates both recreation and environmental protection goals. Ecological transportation systems, including bike lanes, pedestrian pathways, and light rail systems, provide alternative transportation options, contributing to the liveability of cities. This study aims to analyse the potential of Uzundere for greenway and ecological transport systems in alignment with strategies such as the European Green Deal and Turkey's 12th Development Plan. By employing a SWOT analysis, it evaluates how Uzundere’s natural and cultural richness can contribute to sustainable tourism. The study highlights the role of tourism as a tool for rural development, while also addressing the social, economic, and environmental benefits of ecological transport systems. Since being declared a Cittaslow in 2016, Uzundere has taken significant steps towards sustainable tourism and the development of green infrastructure. In line with the goals set out in the TRA1 Region Tourism Strategy and the Uzundere Strategic Development Plan, the development of greenways and the strengthening of ecological transport infrastructure has increased the district’s potential for alternative tourism. In this context, Uzundere is expected to contribute both to local development and to the broader national sustainable development goals. The protection and development of the district’s ecological and tourism assets, the promotion of environmentally friendly tourism models, and the active involvement of local communities in this process will play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable future development of Uzundere.
