Resilient Design: The Key to Resilient Building Strategies to Combat Climate Change

Natural disasters, rising sea levels, fluctuations in air temperatures, and the rapid increase in drought are concrete consequences of climate change observed in every region of the world. Alongside these, losses in agricultural areas and a decline in food production, as well as the diminishing of clean water resources and the migrations brought about by these negative conditions, are significant issues. In this context, buildings, which account for 50% of global energy consumption, play a considerable role. Therefore, among the measures to be taken, leveraging advanced design strategies and innovative technologies, as well as adopting an adaptable design approach, is the responsibility of architecture and architects. This study aims to highlight the importance of adaptable design, which plays a crucial role in combating climate change, through selected examples implemented worldwide that align with the study's objectives. To achieve this aim, a comprehensive review of the relevant domestic and international literature has been conducted, focusing on the global effects of climate change, the fundamental principles of adaptable design, and successful examples where these principles have been applied. The examined examples demonstrate that adaptable buildings can adapt to changing climate conditions, resulting in the production of more resilient structures. Furthermore, it has been concluded that the use of renewable energy sources in these buildings reduces energy consumption, while effective water management and integration with natural systems help decrease the risks of drought and flooding. Additionally, the use of recyclable materials and the implementation of modular designs that can change according to needs contribute to mitigating the negative effects of climate change.
