Maternal Mortality: Here and Abroad

The Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology annual meeting is a forum where new and emerging literature that informs the clinical practice of obstetric anesthesiology is presented. Center stage at this meeting is the Gerard W. Ostheimer lecture which reviews the most salient research of the preceding year. Pervez Sultan conveys the literature review from the 2023 Ostheimer lecture in this issue with a focus on global inequities of obstetric care and trajectories of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The content of this narrative review is expansive. This infographic attempts to draw attention to some of the major statistics defining maternal mortality rates presented in the review.
