3D CT RECONSTRUCTION: UNVEILING LIVER VOLUME DYNAMICS AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH BMI AND BODY SURFACE AREA
Introduction: Estimation of liver size has important clinical implications. A thorough knowledge of liver dimensions and volume is prerequisite for clinical assessment of liver disorders. It can facilitate decision making in liver transplant surgery to avoid donor-recipient graft mismatch. In liver transplantation, pre-transplant liver volume is an independent determinant of the prognosis of graft survival. The liver span measured by palpation and USG is prone to inter-observer variability and poor repeatability. Hence, there is need for 3D volumetric reconstruction. To estim Objective: ate liver volume by 3D CT reconstruction and to correlate BMI and body surface area with the liver volume in patients of south Karnataka region. This cross sectional observational study was performed by retrospective Materials and Methods: evaluation of 1000 patients in the age group of 20-90 years who have undergone CT abdomen at the Department of Radiology, MIMS, Mandya during the study period from May 2023 to December 2023. Mass lesions of liver, liver laceration, cirrhosis of liver, storage disorders and age<20 years were excluded from the study. The clinical details of these patients were retrieved from the HIS. Estimation of liver volume was performed using Fujifilm synapse 3D software on axial CT image dataset. Volume was determined by the volume rendering tool. The statistical analysis was performed using statistical software(IBM). Average liver volume was 1393+/-487ml for an average BMI of 24.5+/- Results: 5.4kg/m2 and average BSA of 1.43+/-0.2(m2). From our study results, there is a positive correlation between liver volume and BSA and this correlation is statistically significant with P-value less than 0.05. 3D CT reconstruction Conclusion: is a useful tool for accurate liver volume estimation. Our study shows a positive correlation between liver volume and BSA.
