Influence of Light, Temperature, and Irrigation on Grafted Cucumber Seedlings in Biodegradable Paper Pots

This study examined the effects of light intensity, night temperature, and irrigation frequency on the growth of grafted cucumber seedlings in biodegradable paper pots compared with conventional plug trays. The experiment was conducted over two seasons (summer and autumn) using eight treatments that combined two shading levels (75% shading and no shading), two night temperatures (15C in a growth chamber and ambient greenhouse temperature), and two irrigation frequencies (once or twice daily). In summer, the average daily light integral (DLI) was 21.3 molm -2 day -1 with a mean temperature of 26.2C, while in autumn, the DLI was 5.3 molm -2 day -1 with a mean temperature of 22.0C.Grafted cucumber seedlings grown in paper pots showed higher sensitivity to changes in light intensity and temperature compared to those grown in plug trays.Paper pot seedlings exhibited greater uniformity among individuals than plug tray seedlings.Although paper pot seedlings had slightly shorter shoot lengths and lower total dry mass than plug tray seedlings, their root dry mass was comparable or greater.Under low light conditions, a night temperature of 15C effectively suppressed stem elongation.Biodegradable paper pots can be considered a promising alternative to conventional plug trays for grafted cucumber seedling production, particularly demonstrating advantages in producing uniform seedlings and promoting superior root system development. However, the use of paper pots requires more precise environmental management, especially regarding light intensity and irrigation control.
