PRO-OXIDANT AND ANTIOXIDANT STATUS AS A DIAGNOSTIC INDEX OF PREECLAMPSIA RISK

Background: Preeclampsia still causes maternal death and morbidity. This condition pathogenesis involves oxidative stress. This study hypothesizes that decreased antioxidant defense mechanisms may increase lipid peroxidation, notably malondialdehyde (MDA), and preeclampsia risk. Biochemical changes in lipid peroxidation (MDA) and enzymatic antioxidants like S Aim: uperoxide Dismutase(SOD) and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were investigated in normal and preeclampsia pregnant women. Of the 100 Materials and Methods: cases, 50 were healthy pregnant women and 50 were preeclampsia women who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fasting venous blood samples were taken during antepartum to evaluate serum MDA, plasma SOD, and GPx levels. The findings revealed a si Result: gnificant elevation in MDA levels 326.13 ± 101.54 and 195.07 ± 20.06 , p< 0. 001 and decreased antioxidant enzymes SOD levels 84.65 (±) 11.72 and 7,691 (±) 1,046 and GPX levels 133.60 (±) 10.03 and 10,310 (±) 1,592 (p<0.0001) respectively in the preeclampsia women compared to normal pregnant women. Conclusion: In preeclampsia, increased MDA and reduced antioxidant activity indicate oxidative stress. The insufficient neutralisation of reactive oxygen species by antioxidants causes preeclampsia-related oxidative damage and tissue destruction.
