"Such a Nasty Woman". Character Attacks in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Debates

This paper investigates Donald Trump’s character attacks on Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential debates. The most common character attacks that Trump used targeted Clinton’s anger and her judgment, attacks that I argue match the femininity/competence gendered double bind. I show how these attacks harmed Clinton’s credibility while building Trump’s.
