MODIFICATION OF ZIRCONIUM DIOXIDE SURFACE BY AN ELECTRON BEAM IN THE FOREVACUUM PRESSURE RANGE
The effect of electron-beam treatment on the strength and surface topography of zirconium ceramics was explored. Yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconium dioxide ceramic (TZP) sintered in a furnace at 1400°C was selected as sample material. Evaluation of the surface topography using an optical profilometer showed that, in certain treatment regimes, the surface roughness (Sa) of a group of samples increased by a factor of 3 compared to samples treated in other regimes. The surface area (Sdr) increased to 16% over that of an ideal plane, an increase of a factor of 5.7. We determined the optimal mode for surface modification of zirconium ceramic by an electron beam that offers enhanced osteoblastic reactions and the expression of genes responsible for the production of osteocalcin.
