Communication—Simple Model for Discharge of Lithium Battery

Shell-progressive framework was applied to lithium ion battery to arrive at a simple analytic relationship for the discharge of the battery. The relationship provides the depth of discharge as a function of time with a coefficient involving physical properties and another representing potential discharge capacity, given the discharge rate and the state of charge in the previous charge-discharge cycle. Also derived is a relationship between the discharge time and the current, which can be used as an alternative to Peukert’s law. The results should be useful for assessing the discharge behavior and for designing the electrode.

Abstract

Shell-progressive framework was applied to lithium ion battery to arrive at a simple analytic relationship for the discharge of the battery. The relationship provides the depth of discharge as a function of time with a coefficient involving physical properties and another representing potential discharge capacity, given the discharge rate and the state of charge in the previous charge-discharge cycle. Also derived is a relationship between the discharge time and the current, which can be used as an alternative to Peukert’s law. The results should be useful for assessing the discharge behavior and for designing the electrode.
