A IMPORTÂNCIA DA ORIENTAÇÃO FARMACÊUTICA QUANTO AO USO IRRACIONAL DO LEVONORGESTREL

Levonorgestrel, commonly known as the "morning-after pill," is widely used as an emergency contraceptive. However, its improper use can compromise its efficacy and lead to adverse effects, particularly in women with high BMI. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of incorrect use of levonorgestrel and evaluate the importance of pharmaceutical intervention to ensure its safe and effective use. A systematic review of articles published between 2014 and 2024 was conducted, with searches in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases. Ten studies on the rational use of levonorgestrel and the role of the pharmacist were analyzed. The results showed that factors such as high body weight reduce the effectiveness of the drug, while incorrect use increases the risk of side effects. Pharmacist intervention proved essential in reducing self-medication cases and improving contraceptive efficacy. Pharmaceutical guidance directly contributes to the safe use of levonorgestrel, minimizing contraceptive failures and adverse effects, and promoting public health.
