Preface

Following an interruption due to the COVID pandemic, the international symposium “Symmetries in Science”, a series initiated by Bruno Gruber in 1979, continued with SIS XIX, July 30 - August 4, 2023 in Bregenz, Austria. Following the conception of the organizers of the first edition, the size of the event has been kept to a modest number of about thirty participants, as well as the mixture of well-established experts with young researchers, a limitation that has the gratifying advantage of enabling the participants to share their experience in scientific discussions beyond the official schedule, thus helping to create the basis for new collaborations. The outcome of the colloquium shows that this interaction principle has once more been faithfully maintained. Unfortunately, some of the historic participants of the symposium, mainly coming from outside the EU, could not attend the meeting in person on this occasion, due to a number of reasons, albeit it is hoped that they contribute to the success of the symposium in the future. The conference took place again at Gasthof Hotel Lamm, a location well-known to former participants, and that has always been the preferred meeting place for after-lecture and evening discussions, profiting from its very hospitable environment. As in the past, the topics of the symposium were highly interdisciplinary, covering a wide range of topics – from new mathematical techniques applied to physics to more specialized subjects at different scales, from the very small (physics of elementary particles) to the extremely large (cosmology). The organizers express their gratitude to all the participants for their oral and written contributions, which are the main indicators for the success of the conference, as well as for maintaining the settled tradition of interdisciplinary interaction. A special acknowledgement is due to Annette Hoyer-Holtorf, who acted as the scientific secretary, decisively contributing to the smooth development of the meeting with her devoted assistance in the overall organization, as well as for the friendly atmosphere which dominated the conference. We are also indebted to the referees for their valuable and constructive reports, that have helped to maintain the high standard of the submissions. The State of Vorarlberg and the City of Bregenz are acknowledged as sponsors for supporting the social events.
