EFICÁCIA DA TOXINA BOTULÍNICA NO TRATAMENTO DO BRUXISMO: UMA REVISÃO DA LITERATURA
Bruxism, characterized by grinding or clenching of the teeth, is a condition that can lead to significant complications, such as temporomandibular dysfunction and dental wear. Given the limitations of traditional therapeutic approaches, botulinum toxin type A (BTA) has been investigated as a promising alternative for the treatment of bruxism. To prepare this review study, a search was conducted in digital databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar and SciELO. The search terms were “botulinum toxin type A (BTA)”, “bruxism” and “use of botulinum toxin in dentistry”. Articles published in the last 20 years that addressed the efficacy of botulinum toxin in the treatment of bruxism were selected. The literature review revealed that botulinum toxin is ii effective in reducing muscle activity and relieving bruxism symptoms, presenting results comparable to oral protection devices. Intramuscular application of the toxin inhibits the release of acetylcholine, promoting muscle relaxation and pain relief. The findings indicate that botulinum toxin not only provides symptom relief but also improves the quality of life of patients. The safety and efficacy of BTA reinforce its potential as a viable therapeutic option in the management of bruxism, highlighting the need for further studies to optimize treatment protocols. It is concluded that botulinum toxin type A presents itself as a promising alternative in the treatment of bruxism, offering significant benefits to patients. Continued research in this area is essential to consolidate its use and improve management strategies for this condition.
