Enhanced Backstepping Approach for Diagnosis and Passive Fault Tolerant Control of External Rotor PMSM

This paper presents a diagnosis method and a passive fault-tolerant control approach for an external-rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine. The control is based on a robust Backstepping control strategy with integral action, based on Lyapunov's stability theorem, and integrated with a vector technique to compensate the impact of the fault. Torque ripples lead to speed fluctuations that affect motor drive performance. A 2D finite element analysis is proposed for fault detection, using coil sensors. This analysis focuses in particular on the specific frequency component of the machine's external magnetic field. The impact of the fault is then compensated for enabling the fault-tolerant control to achieve its objectives. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant design. The performance of the fault-tolerant control system is evaluated through numerical simulations using MAT-LAB/Simulink.
