ABORDAGENS CLÍNICAS E TERAPÊUTICAS DA CATARATA CANINA: Revisão da fisiopatologia e classificações

Cataract is a condition in which the capsules or fibers of the lens become opaque because of changes in the lamellar architecture of these structures. They frequently affect some breeds of dogs, which are considered one of the main causes of blindness. The diagnosis is based on a complete history, obtained with help from the owner, systemic and ophthalmic examinations of the patient. For animals and humans, surgical treatment is the most recommended. Still, complications can arise after cataract surgery. This article aims to provide an approach to the anatomy of the eye, with a focus on cataracts. To this end, the following topics were explored: cataract pathophysiology, classifications, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment options. The discussion of the results was conducted with the aim of offering relevant information for the understanding and effective management of this ophthalmological condition in dogs. The article in question is a narrative bibliographic review on the topic, prepared based on articles, theses, and dissertations, available in the electronic collection, published between the years 2010 and 2023, available in places such as: Capes, Pubmed, Scielo and periodicals of magazines and newspapers.
