A Metasurface Using Molybdenum Disulfide as a Super‐Mossian Dielectric Material

Abstract High‐index dielectrics or Super‐Mossian materials are essential for emerging nanophotonic applications. Several transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are promising as super‐Mossian dielectric materials. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is an outstanding super‐Mossian TMDC exceeding Moss' rule prediction of its refractive index by nearly 40%. This high refractive index enables compact, multi‐functional, and high‐performance metadevices. Here, a MoS 2 metasurface is experimentally demonstrated using resonators with volumes of nearly a tenth of those made of silicon. To harness their phase control ability, a MoS 2 blazed metasurface is designed, fabricated, and demonstrated. The performance of the device is benchmarked by rigorous‐coupled‐wave‐analysis calculation. The results suggest that MoS 2 holds great promise as a dielectric material platform for emerging nanophotonic technologies.
