MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY FROM ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION IN ELDERLY PEOPLE IN BRAZIL (2018 TO 2022)

Introduction: Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) is an ischemic condition that causes the death of myocytes due to an imbalance between the supply and demand of oxygen to the myocardium, being the main isolated cause of death among chronic non-communicable diseases in Brazil, especially in the elderly population. Objective: The research aims to analyze the prevalence of morbidity and mortality in the elderly due to AMI, from 2018 to 2022 in Brazil. Methods: This is an ecological time series study, whose data were obtained from the Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), where the morbidity and mortality of the elderly population (≥ 60 years old), diagnosed with AMI and who evolved to death, in the analyzed period was identified. The data were organized in an Excel spreadsheet, and graphs were created, which were then exported to Word and analyzed descriptively. Results and discussion: The data collected at the national level portray a scenario showing a higher number of deaths in the Southeast region (45.99%) and a lower number in the North region (5.73%). Regarding the period analyzed, it was found that the year 2022 was the one with the highest number of deaths (n=74,897), in contrast to the year 2020, which had a lower mortality rate (n=69,119). Regarding demographic data such as sex, age, and color/race, it was found that males in the age group of 60 to 69 years have a higher morbidity and mortality. Demonstrating the opposite, females had a higher mortality in the age group of 80 years and over. Regarding color/race, it was found that whites have a higher total mortality. Conclusion: Thus, after analyzing the data, it was found that the mortality rate due to Acute Myocardial Infarction is high in the elderly population, since the aging process changes the health profile of this population.
