Oral presentation

Background: Emergence delirium (ED) presents as a transient state of pronounced irritation and dissociation following the cessation of anesthesia.Overall estimated incidence of ED is 18%-30%, it can surge to 50%-80% in children aged 2-5 years.Preoperative sleep disorders have been implicated in triggering cognitive and behavioral dysfunctions, with studies suggesting significant correlations between Preoperative obstructive sleep apnea and poor sleep quality with emergence delirium. However, research on the relationship between sleep quality and ED remains limited. Objectives:1. To establish correlations between emergence delirium and the preoperative STBUR score.2. To conduct a comparative evaluation of STBUR and PQSI scores for identifying postoperative emergence delirium.MaterialsandMethods: The study, conducted by the Department of Anaesthesiology, Pain Medicine and Critical Care at AIIMS, New Delhi, obtained ethical clearance prior to commencement.A total of 100 cases (3-10 years) based on inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited and evaluated for sleep-disordered breathing and OSA using the STBUR questionnaire and PSQI during the PACU phase. The operating room adhered to a standard anesthesia protocol. In the recovery room, Emergence Delirium was assessed using the PAED Score at 5-min intervals for the first 30 min post awakening. The data were subjected to descriptive and non-parametric statistical analysis using SPSS I5.0 version. Results: The emergence delirium study (N = 100) revealed no significant age (p = 0.30) or sex (p = 0.91) disparities between emergence and non-emergence groups.Pearson correlation coefficients highlighted time-dependent associations among STUBR, PSQI, and PAED scores at 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 min post-anesthesia.These nuanced correlations provide valuable insights into the intricate dynamics during emergence, shedding light on the interplay of variables in the perioperative context and contributing to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. Conclusion:The study found no correlation between sleep disturbances and Emergence Delirium through STUBR.
