Entre a denúncia, a memória e a utopia: o cinema que desafia a ditadura militar no Brasil

Still under the Brazilian military dictatorship, two filmmakers who had been political prisoners leave the country and decide to use cinema as an instrument of confrontation and of construction of ideas of a future for the country. Living in exile in Chile, Luiz Sanz directs Não é hora de chorar, in 1971. In Nicaragua, Lucia Murat filmed O pequeno exército louco, between 1978 and 1980. Faced with the feeling of defeat of the left, Sanz and Murat made films in order to renew hope and elaborate strategies for survival, for denunciation, for the construction of memory, especially for women who suffered specifically from the violence of the dictatorship. In this article, we propose to investigate the trajectory and performance of these two filmmakers and reflect on the context of production and the importance of the films both in the dispute of narratives in the present and as testimonies of history.
