Practical Applications of Celebrity SPACs: Advantageous or Gimmicky?
In <ext-link>Celebrity SPACs: Advantageous or Gimmicky</ext-link>, from the February 2024 issue of The Journal of Investing, author Emre Kuvvet of Nova Southeastern University asserts that celebrity involvement in special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) generally delivers higher value for investors. Celebrity SPACs tend to attract higher funding, higher-quality intermediaries, better-quality target acquisitions, higher returns, and faster acquisition times. Kuvvet also notes that some types of celebrities, such as those in politics and sports, tend to offer higher value than celebrities in other areas. Additionally, the positions celebrities hold in a business can influence the type and strength of benefits received from their involvement. While celebrity chairs, CEOs, and board members generally have positive effects on SPACs, celebrity advisors do not. Kuvvet also acknowledges the intense criticism of SPACs from the media and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The criticism stems partially from an imbalance in information available to everyday investors. That said, celebrities have spent years cultivating their brand reputations and are unlikely to risk them on shady deals. Additionally, some celebrities, such as early Google investor Shaquille O’Neal, have shown strong business acumen over the years.
