Design of Wet Cell Type Hydrogen Electrolyzer Using Distilled Water as Raw Material
Greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion are massive, accounting for 95.15% of total emissions in 2019, and are becoming increasingly alarming. Replacing fossil fuels with alternative fuels that are renewable and environmentally friendly is a highly promising solution. The production of green hydrogen is done by electrolysis. This study seeks to design and construct an efficient wet cell-type hydrogen gas electrolyzer, utilizing distilled water as the primary raw material. This research used a stainless steel 316 electrode with a 0.8 mm thickness and a KOH catalyst solution with a 25% wt concentration. The power used is 12 V and 50 A. The calculation results show that the Electrolyzer designed has a cell voltage of 1.652 V per cell. Therefore, the number of stacks needed to produce 0.031 g/min hydrogen gas is seven stacks. Testing the efficiency of electrolyzer cells is also carried out to determine the extent to which this tool can produce hydrogen effectively. The test results obtained the highest mass of hydrogen from electrolysis at a current of 50 A of 0.022 g/min, 40 A of 0.016 g/min, and the lowest at 30 A of 0.014 g/min. The highest electrolysis cell efficiency is at a current strength of 30 A of 56%.
