COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF OUTCOMES FOLLOWING ILEOSTOMY AND COLOSTOMY CLOSURE
A study conducted at Index Medical College, Indore, compared the short-term outcomes of ileostomy and colostomy closures to determine which procedure is preferable for diversion based on stoma reversal. The study involved two groups of 32 patients each, with Group 1 consisting of ileostomy patients and Group 2 including colostomy patients, further divided into those who underwent the Hartmann procedure or had a simple loop colostomy. Results showed that intraoperative blood loss was highest in the Hartmann group due to severe adhesions, while the ileostomy group had less blood loss and fewer postoperative complications, such as wound infection, anastomotic leakage, and ileus, which were easier to manage. Overall, ileostomy closure was found to be superior, requiring a simpler, less invasive procedure compared to colostomy closure, which often necessitated exploration.
