The Lithium-Ion Battery-Based Cell Balancing Technique for EVs: A Comparative Performance Analysis in MATLAB

The creation of electric vehicles (EVs) has the potential to mitigate energy scarcity and environmental pollution. However, the design and management of electric vehicle battery systems have a substantial effect on both the performance and life span of the battery pack. The efficiency, safety, and dependability of electric vehicles are maintained by Battery Management Systems through monitoring and controlling battery packs. The principles of battery modeling are reviewed in this article, along with passive and also active cell balancing techniques that are crucial in preserving battery performance. However, maintaining battery life is particularly important through cell balancing. In contrast, individual cell voltages may diverge over time if there is no balancing system, rapidly decreasing the lithium battery pack cell capacity, which results in system failure. The review discusses various cell balancing methodologies, highlighting their comparative advantages and disadvantages. This review underscores the noteworthy consequence of effective Li-ion cell balancing in improving the performance and lifespan of the battery. A comparative analysis of active and passive cell balancing techniques is demonstrated by extensive analysis using a twocell Li-ion battery pack in the Simulink of MATLAB for the Electric Vehicle application.
