Data-centric Competencies through Professional Certification: Understanding the Gap between Industry and Undergraduate Data Science Education
The digital revolution has transformed industries, making data science pivotal for strategic decision-making. This shift requires a close alignment between university curricula and industry needs to adequately prepare graduates for the challenges of a data-driven economy. This study, through a pilot survey of IT professionals, master’s and undergraduate students in data analytics in Ecuador and Poland, investigates the gap between current academic programs and practical industry requirements. Preliminary findings indicate a robust consensus on the value of professional certifications for career advancement and highlight a growing demand for competencies in data analytics and artificial intelligence, especially in Ecuador. Challenges such as the lack of practical applications and the discrepancy between educational content and business realities are noted. In response, this paper proposes a motivation model that integrates professional certifications into data science curricula to enhance employability, competitiveness, and adaptability. This model emphasizes the importance of soft skills and the recognition of certifications in the business sphere. By addressing the specific needs and expectations of industry professionals, this study contributes to the discourse on refining data science education, aiming to bridge the academic-industry gap and equip graduates with the essential competencies needed for success in the dynamic IT landscape.
