Multi-Area Power System Frequency Regulation based Coordinated Control of SMES Farms
Power systems and their components are susceptible to frequency and voltage instability during disturbances, affecting critical sectors such as industry, transportation, medicine, and banking. This study introduces a phasor model of a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage System (SMES) with intelligent fuzzy logic-based control for frequency regulation using SMES system farms. The SMES model allows for simultaneous and independent control of reactive and active power injected into or absorbed from the grid. Frequency measurements are acquired via Virtual Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), which are utilized to calculate the Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF). This value is then input into a fuzzy control system to coordinate the energy injection or absorption from the SMES farms. Finally, two SMES farms are integrated into the IEEE 39-Bus New England system to improve frequency stability during disturbances caused by load disconnection and generation tripping. This work is a continuation of the methodologies presented in [2] and [3].
