Integration of Smart Sensor Technology in Wearable Masks for Real-Time Monitoring of Respiratory Health and Infectious Diseases

This study presents the design and development of a novel wearable mask integrated with advanced sensing technology for real-time monitoring of vital respiratory health parameters. The mask incorporates sensors that measure heart rate, respiration rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and body temperature - key indicators of conditions such as pneumonia caused by infectious diseases, including COVID-19. A microcontroller unit (MCU) manages the data acquisition and processing, enabling wireless transmission of real-time health data to a mobile device via Wi-Fi. The system facilitates remote, non-invasive monitoring, reducing the need for direct patient-healthcare worker interactions and lowering the risk of exposure to contagious diseases. A study involving 60 participants demonstrated the mask's accuracy and reliability in capturing vital health metrics. This innovative approach, combined with Ultraviolet-C spectrum disinfection for extended mask use, offers a practical solution for early detection and continuous management of respiratory conditions. The wearable mask system has the potential to revolutionize healthcare monitoring, particularly during pandemics, by providing convenient, real-time health surveillance.
