The role of unpredictability in the formation and maintenance of complex systems
Abstract The terms ‘complexity’ and ‘chaos’ are often discussed in the literature as two phenomena that are either two sides of the same coin or that cause each other. However, they are quite distinct in a fundamental way. This paper explains why chaos and complexity should not be conflated and discusses the origin of this common misunderstanding.
