Studying the Standoff Distance and Speed to Address the Surface Quality of the Cutting Brass by Water Jet Machine (WJM(
The paper aims to study the effect of changing the standoff distance (SOD) and cutting speed (CS) on the machining results of an Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) on the surfaces of brass sheets. The study addressed cutting width, cutting edge quality, and surface roughness. An Abrasive Water Jet machine (AWJM) was machined, and changes were procedure to the SOD and CS to get the optimum cutting surface quality for the material. The results proved that producing high cutting surface quality needs decreasing the standoff distance and more the cutting speed to reduce the cutting width (CW). In contrast, higher CS and roughness (Ra) led to a reduction in cutting surface quality. The largest cutting width was written at a distance of 5 mm and a speed of 90 mm/min with a measurement of 6.5 mm. Adjusting the clearance distance by 1 mm with the same cutting speed leads to better machining results with a minimum cutting width of 1.7 mm, which indicates good cutting surface quality. Minimum cutting surface quality was noted at higher speeds and roughness. Optimal cutting was accomplished at 90 mm/min with a distance of 5 mm and a roughness of 1.1 μm, while the higher cutting width was noted to be at 150 mm/min, a distance of 1 mm, and a roughness of 8.2 μm.
