Carbon Mineralization Technology Applied in Alkaline Byproducts Used as Admixture in CSA Cement Production

As population continues to increase demand for household and infrastructure expansion is imminent. The most used man-made material, concrete, presents to us as an ally which allow us to develop our cities in a speedy way, but as well show to us as challenging foe due to the high consumption of natural non-renewable resources and high CO2 emissions from production. The search for new ways of mitigating the impact created from cement industry is of high importance as we develop optimal systems which allow us to grow in a sustainable manner. This paper reviews the use of green cements like CSA and application of calcium carbonate used as admixture in the cement production. Highlight is put in the carbon mineralization of supplementary cementitious materials, which some are even considered hazardous wastes, that have the potential to generate serious environmental damage if not properly treated. This paper seeks to point out the works done for the growing use of green cements and industrial byproducts in search for a circular economy which ultimately benefits the cement industry, global population and nature.
