The possibility of recycling iron sludge in the steel industry

Abstract The steel industry strives to achieve quality steel with improved mechanical properties. In order to meet these market requirements, steel manufacturers need to streamline technological operations, increase process efficiency and productivity, and improve product quality control. Old iron and scrap metal used in the production of steel come from various sources and special attention should be paid to their quality, in particular, to the content of elements harmful to steel. The paper presents the results of the research undertaken on the use as raw material of the steel-making aggregates, in addition to the classic assortments of old iron of by-products obtained from the processing of iron slats in the form of briquettes. The influence of the quality of waste used was assessed by expanding the raw material base in the context of sustainable development, on steel blanks by investigating the effect on the chemical composition as well as the possibility of recovery of alloying element.
