Impact of vaccines in reducing antimicrobial resistance

On Oct 10, 2024, WHO published a report highlighting the role of vaccines in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Titled Estimating the impact of vaccines in reducing antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use, the report suggests that vaccines could have averted approximately 515 000 of the 5 million deaths associated with AMR in 2019 alone. Additionally, vaccines could reduce the annual hospital costs related to drug resistant infections, estimated at US$730 billion, by one third.
