Teaching history in secondary school - expectations and challenges in the light of survey results
The technological revolution has left its mark on the functioning of the school, the student and the teacher at each educational stage. This process, despite the numerous opportunities it creates, forces us to look for new solutions in the educational space. In recent years, Polish students’ expectations towards teachers and schools have changed. A survey conducted among 147 secondary school students was intended to determine these expectations. The aim of the study was to obtain answers to questions about the level of interest in history and the teaching resources and methods used by teachers. In addition, the survey helped to determine the difficulties that students face while learning history, as well as to learn about their expectations regarding the selection of content and practices used during lessons. The analysis of the survey results was used to determine the challenges which history teachers have to face up to. These included: skillful use of technology and communication tools in the teaching-learning process, effective student motivation, shaping soft skills, orienting students to lifelong learning, taking into account the findings of neurodidactics and verifying the role of the teacher and his relationship with the student.
