CHRONIC TONSILITIS WITH CHORISTOMA: A RARE ENTITY
Introduction: Choristoma is defined as the presence of cells in abnormal locations resulting from defects during embryological development. These lesions consist of aggregates of normal cells or tissues that are misplaced in unusual locations. Literature reports various types of choristomas, including cartilaginous ones found in the cervix, endometrium, breast tissue, and oral cavity. In the oral region, cartilaginous choristomas are particularly rare, occurring more frequently on the tongue and less often on the soft palate and gingiva. Case Reports:In this case series, we present three instances of cartilaginous choristomas discovered incidentally during the microscopic examination of excised tonsil tissues. Histopathological analysis revealed islands of mature hyaline cartilage surrounded by areas of lymphoid hyperplasia. Choristomas can complicate the differential diagnosis of true neoplasms due to their ra Conclusion: rity and potential for growth. Consequently, pathologists must include cartilaginous choristomas in the differential diagnosis of cartilaginous lesions, as these are uncommon and may be overlooked. Awareness and careful examination are essential to distinguish these rare entities from other more common neoplasms.
