New single-toroidal sintered diamond anvil and assembly for high pressure neutron diffraction

The in-situ high pressure neutron diffraction experiment which require large volume sample is still challenging, especially in generation of simultaneous high pressure-temperature ( P - T ) condition. Despite the high pressure neutron diffraction experiments can be extended to more than 20 GPa to date, it is difficult to generate the pressure over 10 GPa with large volume sample in millimeter scale. Base on the strategy that introducing gasket in multi-anvil press, a new single-toroidal sintered diamond anvil and high P - T assembly in Paris-Edinburgh press have been designed, which would promote the neutron diffraction technique to a broadened P - T range. This new single-toroidal set-up can generate pressure more than 14 GPa with the pressure generating efficiency close to double-toroidal anvil, and exhibits remarkable stability performance in high P - T experiments. The high P - T neutron diffraction experiment results show that the new set-up can be obtained 8.7(1) GPa in pressure and 1380(15) K in temperature with a large sample volume of 38 mm 3 . • The new single-toroidal diamond anvil developed with plane-shaped edge and high pressure-temperature assembly was performed higher pressure generating efficiency and outstanding stability. • The newly designed single-toroidal anvil can generate the pressure up to 14 GPa, is much higher than the pressure generated by the ordinary single-toroidal anvil which is usually less than 10 GPa. • The in-situ neutron diffraction experiments show that the newly designed single-toroidal set-up can obtained pressure and temperature up to 8.5 GPa and 1500 K with a large sample volume.
