Gaulish *Uidlu(I)a ‘Sorceress
It has long been recognised that the Gaulish feminine genitive singular uidluias in the Larzac inscription belongs to the semantic sphere of magical knowledge. We propose a derivational history for *uidlu(i)a that is consistent with Indo-European noun formation, and we identify a close comparandum in an Old Irish poem that contrasts magic and war.
