Exemplar regional headache services in Oxford and SW London: what can we learn from them?

The ABN Services committee aims to support membership in driving forward excellent services in the UK. Here, we identify and share successful headache services as per the ABN Strategy. All regional representatives of the ABN Services committee were asked to identify services that work well within their regions (hence a limitation is a potential lack of knowledge of every service in UK). Headache services are highlighted due to its high prevalence, the need for effective and efficient models of care being a universal challenge, and evidence of impact. Oxford and South West London regions have models highlighted by NICE and GIRFT. Both are multiprofessional services with single points of referral through which patients can be triaged to the most appropriate strand of the service. This is an efficient use of resources and promotes specialised headache care within the community. Previously published data shows how patients can be managed appropriately by this service with good feedback from patients. These services as examples of successful headache pathways developed within the financial and workforce constraints of the current NHS. We hope other services will adopt these models and improve patient care. We welcome discussion around this.
