Assessing Indian hospital adherence to NICE guidelines for headache care: pre- and post- audit study

Introduction
Headaches significantly impact individuals globally, necessitating effective diagnosis and management. To ensure optimal patient care, this study assesses hospital practices in alignment with NICE guidelines for individuals over 12 years old.
Methodology
A systematic approach involving data collection, structured interviews, and checklist-based assessments was employed. Patient records and healthcare professional insights were analyzed to identify areas of adherence and deviations from NICE guidelines.
Results
Post-audit improvements include increased diligence in enquiring about red flag signs, accurate diagnosis alignment, and heightened awareness of menstrual-related migraines. Consistent practices were observed in age distribution, neuroimaging, and avoiding ergots and opioids for acute treatment.
Discussion
The findings reflect a positive shift in healthcare practices, emphasizing the impact of interventions on diagnosis accuracy, patient safety, and awareness. Areas for further progress, such as medication overdose consideration, underscore the dynamic nature of healthcare practices.
Conclusion
The audit showcases healthcare providers’ dedication to evidence-based practices and continuous improvement in headache diagnosis and management. The study highlights successes, areas for improvement, and the ongoing need for training and education to uphold the highest standards of patient care. Adhering to NICE guidelines ensures the provision of optimal care for individuals seeking relief from headaches.
