Changing role of the Demand Side Management
With the rise of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources, traditional Demand Side Management (DSM) paradigms have changed. While earlier part of consumption was reallocated outside peak consumption hours (typically at night), today it is preferable to switch on as much consumption as possible during peak production, at the same time as solar panel production. In Hungary, the proportion of installed Photo Voltaic (PV) production is of the same order of magnitude compared to consumption, which is a source of significant anomalies. We examined what consumer groups can be involved in the DSM, how and with what reach. We found that more than half of the energy consumed can be transitionally arranged, and this hides a significant DSM reserve. A household can have a few kW of capacity to contribute to the DSM, whereas for one million households this means GWs. During the transition arrangement, loads can be shifted either to the valley of consumption at night or even to the time of PV production during the day. Finally, based on specific measurements, we presented the different DSM strategies on the daily consumption curve of a household.
