Improvement Measures for Teaching the Combined Character ‘ㅣ’ in Hunminjeongeum

Among the vowel letters in <Hunminjeongeum>, there were letters that represented descending mid vowels of the ‘j’ series by adding the letter ‘ㅣ’ after a vowel letter, such as ‘ㅐ(ㅏ+ㅣ), ㅚ(ㅗ+ㅣ), ㅔ(ㅓ+ㅣ), ㅟ(ㅜ+ㅣ)’. This article aims to propose ways to improve the content of grammar textbooks and teaching-learning methods to address potential teaching-learning issues related to the combined vowel ‘ㅣ’. Specifically, it seeks to include educational content on the phonetic value of the combined vowel ‘ㅣ’ in the unit on ‘letters and phonemes’ of Middle Korean, and to develop methods for teaching-learning the structure and phonetic value of the combined vowel ‘ㅣ’ in connection with the education of grammar or phoneme changes.
