An Analysis of Information Focusing Forms in Newspaper Editorials with a Focus on the Chosun Ilbo and the Hankyoreh

This study analyzes information focusing forms in the editorials of the Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh newspapers published during the 22nd parliamentary elections with a focus on the attitude and intervention of evaluative language theory. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the forms of focalization in the editorials of the two newspapers were mainly realized by selection and emphasis. Second, attitudinal focusing in editorials is presented as intense emotional evaluation centered on judgment by shifting the focus to a negative topic based on positive results(the Chosun Ilbo) or by linking it to hopeful expectations (the Hankyoreh). Third, focusing on engagement in editorials is presented as monogloss in favorable cases and heterogloss in unfavorable ones. That is, when criticizing, a resoulte voice is expressed in monogloss, and when presenting an alternative, it is expressed in heterogloss as a mechanism to avoid responsibility. The Korean language education implications revealed from the above analysis of information focus in editorials are that editorials should be viewed as objects of critical reading rather than as information for forming public opinion.
