YMPHONY NO. 2 BY E. DENISOV: THE LYRICAL ECHO OF THE TRAGIC CONCEPT
The ideological concept of E. Denisov’s Symphony No. 2 reflects the composer’s tragic view of human life with its conflicts and contradictions, passionate striving for the light, but inevitable catastrophe and departure into darkness. The tragic concept is reflected in the mainly lyrical tone of the statement, the chamber-concert style of orchestral music, timbre colouristics and sonor composition technique. The Second Symphony organically combines the features of Denisov’s bright and absolutely individual composer style, characteristic of his works of different genres: it concentrates everything that is most significant in Denisov’s music, becoming both a climax and an epilogue of the artist’s creative path. The study made it possible to characterise the ideological concept and the dramaturgy of the imaginative and semantic development of the symphony, to identify and systematise the genre-style features characteristic of Denisov’s orchestral works as a whole and those clearly manifested in the Second Symphony.
